About Rotorua (Te Arawa)
Rotorua sits on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua in the central North Island, inside a volcanic caldera where geysers, mud pools and hot springs break through the ground in and around town. It suits families, first-time visitors and anyone interested in Māori culture, with plenty to do within a short drive. Compared with the Bay of Islands or East Cape it is busier and more developed, with a well-established visitor scene.
Getting there
Rotorua Airport (ROT) has Air New Zealand flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. By road, Rotorua is about three hours from Auckland and about an hour from Tauranga. Intercity coaches stop in the town centre.
