Port Wine Guest House
About this stay
Port Wine Guest House is a family guesthouse a five-minute walk from the centre of Neiafu, the main town of Vava'u. Established in the 1970s and run by Tai and Salote Tuiniua and their extended family, it is quiet and homely, with rooms that share a bathroom and rooms with their own, all at low prices. Neiafu's harbour is the starting point for whale swims, sailing, diving and kayaking trips. It suits budget travelers and families who want a genuine Tongan family welcome.

About Vava'u
Vava'u is Tonga's northern island group, a cluster of steep, forested islands around a deep and sheltered harbour. It suits sailors, divers and visitors who come to see humpback whales from about July to October. Compared with Ha'apai it has more boats, cafés and services, and compared with Tongatapu it feels more like a waterfront town than a capital.
Getting there
Lupepau'u Airport (VAV) has domestic flights from Nuku'alofa, and there are sometimes seasonal international links. The inter-island ferry also connects Vava'u with Ha'apai and Tongatapu, though schedules depend on weather. Many visitors arrive by private yacht.
