The Tongan Beach Resort
About this stay
The Tongan Beach Resort is on the island of ʻUtungake, linked by causeway to the main island of Vava'u and a short drive from Neiafu. Its 17 rooms all look over a 180-metre beach on the Port of Refuge harbour, where swimming is safe at all tides. The resort has a licensed restaurant and a beach bar, and runs whale-swim trips in season alongside snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and sailing. It suits couples and families who want a beachfront stay with the water activities of Vava'u arranged from the door.

About Vava'u
Vava'u is Tonga's northern island group, a cluster of steep, forested islands around a deep and sheltered harbour. It suits sailors, divers and visitors who come to see humpback whales from about July to October. Compared with Ha'apai it has more boats, cafés and services, and compared with Tongatapu it feels more like a waterfront town than a capital.
Getting there
Lupepau'u Airport (VAV) has domestic flights from Nuku'alofa, and there are sometimes seasonal international links. The inter-island ferry also connects Vava'u with Ha'apai and Tongatapu, though schedules depend on weather. Many visitors arrive by private yacht.
